ECL’s World Mental Health Quiz Sets a High Industry Standard

World Mental Health Day took place on Monday 10th October, 2022. It is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma.

First celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organisation with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.

This year Mental Health Week at work gave Claire Stacey, our company Mental Health first aider and H&S Manager, the initiative to hold a quiz and team building/talk on mental health for all external site employees and our HQ team. Both initiatives aimed to lightly approach the subject and reassure our men that there is understanding and support within the team.

Sites and departments all got involved, working in teams to complete the quiz, which in turn helped start a conversation around mental health.

The quiz was a massive hit, with 42 teams submitting their answers to topics ranging from general knowledge, fun facts and mental health issues.

Winners were announced on Monday, 10th October 2022. The HQ winner, scoring an impressive 10/10, was the Infrastructure team named ‘The Infrastructables’ (Matt Thornton, Tracey Penwright, Daniel Crosk, James Brennan and Andy Lennox). On the site side, the ‘332 Stanton Cross Parcel 10’ team named ‘Marlow’s Massive’ (clearly after their illustrious Site Manager Dave Marlow) won the quiz with another top score of 10/10. Each of the winning teams received an autumn themed hamper full of the good stuff, sweets, biscuits, savouries and more, delivered during the working day for the guys to enjoy together on their break.

The initiative was such a success that Peter Johnson, an auditor from the Considerate Constructor Scheme, was so impressed by the Mental Health Quiz and how well it was received by all the sites that he asked if he could take a copy of the quiz.

Peter believed it was an excellent way to highlight World Mental Health and has subsequently added the quiz to the best practice section on the Considerate Constructor Websites.

Well done to all the teams and Claire Stacey for taking a subject which is far too often taboo and making it a far easier and unjudgemental topic to discuss within our business and with our colleagues.
