At Priors Hall Park, thoughtful construction is going hand in hand with environmental care. The site team has been awarded an additional BEST PRACTICE point from the Considerate Constructors Scheme in recognition of its proactive efforts to protect local amphibians, including the protected great crested newt.
Roads can present a significant hazard to small wildlife. Amphibians naturally follow kerb lines, often falling into drainage gullies where they become trapped.
Working with an ecologist, the team identified a simple yet effective solution: wildlife kerbs with a recessed channel that allows amphibians to safely bypass drainage gullies.
Fully compatible with standard BS kerb specifications, the design integrates seamlessly into conventional road construction.
The initiative is complemented by load-bearing climate tunnels beneath the road surface, providing safe crossing points while maintaining the stable conditions amphibians need. Positioned close to the surface, the tunnels are designed for easy access and encourage regular use by local species.
Together, these measures show how practical innovation and ecological awareness can make everyday infrastructure work better for both people and wildlife.
